Underground Cooking, Ingham, North Queensland

Kup Murri - Underground Cooking

“Kup Murri” is an Aboriginal traditional style underground cooking of assorted meats & vegetables.

Kup Murri Lunch functions are available at the
Townsville Cultural Centre and Mungalla Station near Ingham.

FAMILIES will be able to enjoy a traditional indigenous lunch cooked underground, talk to the region’s elders and enjoy a few afternoon drinks overlooking Ross Creek in a new tourism initiative for Townsville.

The Cultural Centre hosts a traditional Kup Murri – a selection of food cooked in traditional Aboriginal and Islander-style ground ovens - with guests enjoying the banquet of slowly roasted meats, fish and vegetables while being entertained by local dance troupes.

The exciting Kup Murri concept is currently operating at Mungalla Station, a historical property 15km east of Ingham run by the traditional owners - the Nywaigi people. Mungalla Station won the 2008 North Queensland Tourism Awards in the category of Indigenous Tourism and is a finalist in this year’s awards to be announced on Saturday.

There will be something for adults, young kids and teenagers and we are letting young children in for free so that families can get even more value.
